: PMBOK, PRINCE2, and ISO 21500: Global Fluency in Project Management

The PMBOK Guide is a body of knowledge, PRINCE2 is a project management method, and ISO 21500 is an international standard.

Chapter 1, page 2 of the PMBOK Guide states “the PMBOK guide identifies that subset of the project management body of knowledge that is generally recognized as good practice”. It further states “this standard is a guide, rather than a specific methodology. One can use different methodologies and tools, (e.g., agile, waterfall, PRINCE2) to implement the project management framework.” PRINCE2 refers to the PMBOK Guide as a source of project management knowledge that can be used to guide the PRINCE2 method and enhance a project manager’s ability to tailor projects.

In this session, we describe the unique characteristics of the PMBOK Guide, the PRINCE2 method, and ISO 21500; what they are and are not, and how use of the PRINCE2 method to apply PMBOK knowledge can create a project management ‘system’ capable of satisfying the requirements of the ISO 21500 standard.
