PRESENTATION: Leadership in an Agile Environment

There has been a surge of interest in how to lead in an agile organization. What middle managers do and how they add value. Go on a journey that blends stories about how this presenter learned to lead on a nuclear submarine and how that approach is very much relevant in the modern agile environment.

A leadership worksheet for making the transition to working in an agile environment will be discussed.


For over 30 years, Frank has led, participated in, and managed software projects and programs around the world for clients such as Wacom, Mylan Pharmaceutical, U. S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, NASA, Computer Associates (CA), Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Verizon (GTE), Luxottica, The Christ Hospital, and ThyssenKrupp. He has worked across many different industries including; Oil & Gas, Defense, Software, Government, CPGs, Industrial, Healthcare, Construction, Manufacturing, and Pharmaceuticals.

Today, Frank focuses on using agile principles to help empower and transform organizations. He understands the underlying lean and agile principles and the traditional software development lifecycle, including their benefits and shortcomings. His breath and depth of understanding covers information across the many spaces that agile touches.

Throughout Frank`s software career he has experimented with extreme programing, pair programing and other techniques to accelerate the effectiveness of teams. Frank started his career in the United States Navy while serving on nuclear powered submarines. He spent a total of 11 years in the navy and was part of the crew that built the USS Atlanta (SSN 712). He led software projects as an Architect, Development Lead, Requirements Lead, Design Lead, Test Lead, as well as Program and Project roles. He has spent the last 20 years primarily focused on software projects in various roles as; SCRUM Master, program and project manager, and delivery manager.

Frank is committed to the human interaction side of projects, particularly how leadership plays a key role in success and failure. He is pragmatic and realizes that any framework/solution is merely guidance based on the circumstances and is convinced that, in the end, people make the difference. He has been a student of the agile software movement and has introduced agile to different types and sizes of organizations.

Frank holds a BSCIS and has done graduate work in Software Engineering. He is a SAFe Program Consultant, Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), and a Certified Computer Professional (CCP). He is a certified speaker, trainer, and coach, with the John Maxwell Team. Frank is the President of Forte Leadership Technology, LLC.
