Cyberattacks on the US Department of Defense (DoD) supply chain are a critical national security concern. Nation-state actors such as China, Russia, and North Korea exfiltrate over $600 billion from the US according to Ellen Lord, Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. 

The DoD is working to reduce Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Federal Contract Information (FCI) exfiltration by increasing cybersecurity requirements, non-compliance penalties, and supply chain enforcement for contractors. Companies that work with the DoD will soon need to meet the requirements of the new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) to even bid on contracts. Kate Arrington, CISO, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, said: “Every DoD contract that goes out for proposal, will have a CMMC pre-qualification requirement and every vendor on that contract must have a CMMC certification!” 

A CMMC certification is planned to be valid for 3 years and is already including in some US civilian federal contracts. Many expect that CMMC will become a new cybersecurity standard for future US and International commercial and government business.
