Lighting the Project Management Fire in High School Students

The formula for attracting future project managers is put under the microscope. Doug Arthur, curriculum architect for Deer Park Career Academies, partners with Adam Gergen, Career Academies master instructor, and special PMI SWO guests, to provide an insider’s tour into the rationale behind the design, creation, and implementation of Deer Park’s innovative Project Management Academy.

Featured is the ongoing partnership with the Project Management Institute’s Southwest Ohio chapter that helped build and continues to fuel this unique academy. Lessons learned and recommendations are shared for replicating this program successfully in other high schools.

About the Panelists

Doug ArthurDoug Arthur is principal consultant and co-founder of Transform Consulting LLC, Cincinnati, Ohio, specializing in designing and implementing workforce development programs for organizations, schools, and individuals for the last 40+ years. Transform Consulting is focused on connecting talent to employment opportunities in all sectors. Doug was co-founder of the INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati, and ran the organization from 2006 to 2013. In 2014, Doug was invited by Deer Park City Schools to build a new program – Deer Park Career Academies – bringing students in direct contact with career pathways such as Entrepreneurship, Sports Medicine, Advanced Manufacturing, and Project Management.

Adam Gergen M. Ed. is the Career Academies Instructor at Deer Park High School

Mark OggMark Ogg has been the Deer Park High School Liaison for PM Academy since its inception. He's been organizing volunteers, generating content, coaching student teams, collaborating on roadmap with the District leads & architects, mobilizing PMI Educational Foundation opportunities, and representing the PMI SWO Chapter's overall drive for community impact & outreach in this partnership. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from the University of Cincinnati and a Masters degree from Western Carolina University. He has over 25 years of professional experience in project management. Mark has served as Project Manager in various construction markets including Consumer Goods, Manufacturing, Heavy & Light Industrial, Petroleum, Commercial, Design/Build, and has been responsible for projects from conception through completion as well as maintaining profit and loss responsibility throughout the project life cycle.

Mark has served as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on planning and scheduling, the Lead Project Manager for project controls on all large-scale programs and projects, and as Director of Project Management responsible for professional development and enrichment for staff. He currently serves as a Sr. Manager - Projects in the Corporate Solutions Group for Jones Lang LaSalle.

Mark is professionally accredited in Project Management and Contract Administration. Outside of the office Mark is involved in several professional organizations and enjoys giving back to the profession through his volunteer work, his involvement with association boards, and promoting the value of project management fundamentals and practices.
