Air Force Museum Leadership Experience

Academy_Leadership.jpg

Take off on an intensive 3-day leadership skills development program that combines a proven, highly engaging participant program with examples of leadership through innovation and conflict, presented by Academy Leadership.

The National Museum of the US Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is the world's largest military aviation museum. The museum features more than 350 aerospace vehicles and missiles and thousands of artifacts amid more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space. Consider the leadership necessary to progress from balloons to landing people on the moon in only about 65 years — and in that period prevailing in two world wars and many other conflicts. Each day will cover crucial leadership topics, discussion on tour how those principles were exemplified in the development of air power. Three months of post-course coaching and 36 PDUs from the Project Management Institute make this opportunity a true value. Corporate discounts and Buddy Plans are available.

Program Details

Each day begins in one of the museum learning centers where we discuss practical leadership concepts proven in military and corporate settings. We will review assignments from the previous day and participant questions, then build on what has been learned. Throughout each day we will take the learning on tour as we examine aircraft, missiles, and spacecraft. We use those exhibits as case studies to consider the context, choices, and leadership actions of some of the great people of aviation.

Examples include:

  • Goal setting — We look at how President Kennedy set a goal to send men to the moon, then look at spacecraft on display that actually went to the moon.
  • Communication — In a control tower mock up we talk about how feedback between controllers and pilots minimizes confusion.
  • Leadership Style — We discuss how POW leaders in Vietnam maintained cohesion and hope.
  • Setting priorities — We look at spy satellites and discuss how high payoff activities were arranged.
  • Accountability — We walk through previous 'Air Force 1' aircraft, include that used by Harry 'the buck stops here' Truman.

We do about three tours per day. At the conclusion of each tour, you will have some time to continue exploration on your own before we resume the program together.

Prior to completion of the course on the final day, you will have a chance to tie-up loose ends and prepare for the coaching opportunities that will be scheduled for the following three months.

Evenings will allow you to explore Dayton — home of the Wright brothers and the birthplace of aviation. Dayton has a rich industrial history that extends to early office automation and the dawn of the automobile age.
